For this week’s Mental Health Day, we’re highlighting men’s mental health. If you think your own mental health is struggling, you’re not the only one.
So, mental health is a complicated word. There are many different ways to describe it. Some people think they’re depressed but in reality its something completely different. We’re also often told that mental health is something that your brain is trying to fix. That’s a bit of a myth because the brain isn’t the only source of mental health.
I think the most common misconception is that mental health is a symptom of a disease. Thats why we say “depression”. It is a symptom of a disease. Depression is just a symptom of a disease. We’ve all had times when we felt down, anxious, and unmotivated. We’ve all had times when we felt anxious and unmotivated.
Depression is a symptom of the brain being damaged. And the brain is not the only source of mental health. The brain is not the only source of mental health. We all have mood swings, and the same way that we all have a mood swing, we all have a mood disorder. Mood disorders are mental health disorders.
Mood disorders are so commonly and deeply diagnosed that they have become quite common in the U.S. and Canada. Mood disorders include depression, anxiety, mania, psychosis, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bipolar disorder. I myself have been diagnosed with depression, which is the same thing as bipolar disorder. I have also been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
I have also been diagnosed with OCD and my mother has bipolar disorder. I don’t know why I’m mentioning this because this is very normal and expected.
I actually think the way a lot of the mental health treatments are framed is pretty bad. In the interest of full disclosure, I have received some form of mental health treatment (including electroshock therapy, which is not the same thing as electroconvulsive therapy, which is different). Most of the depression and anxiety treatments I received involved talking therapies that were more like therapy and were all basically useless. But that’s not what most mental health professionals would think.
Mental health professionals often think that the “treatment” is all you need. The reality is that it’s not all you need. Most of the treatment you receive is based on how other people feel about you, how you feel about other people, etc. For example, you may be told that you need to take a certain drug to prevent you from getting into a fight or that you need to get a certain job so you never have to fight again.
If you don’t like the way that other people feel about you, you can develop a lot of resentment. Your thoughts and feelings can be distorted, you can have negative thoughts about yourself which can affect how others see you. You can have a lot of anxiety which can affect your relationships, and you can have a lot of depression.
Mental health is a hot topic these days, and I think it’s important to talk about it on a regular basis. To help you do this, the Mental Health Awareness Center at the University of Chicago is holding a mental health day. As the title of the flyer says, the goal is to bring together people who are experiencing mental health issues and to talk about it.
